What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is inflammation of the tissues of the gum. When plaque builds up excessively along the gum line the gums can become irritated and inflamed resulting in soreness.
My gums are sore and red; does that mean I have gingivitis?
If your gums have become tender or you are experiencing bleeding gums then you may have gingivitis. But over-vigorous brushing and flossing can also be the cause of these symptoms. If you have ruled these out as possible culprits then it is important to get to a dentist for a checkup as soon as possible.
If treated early, more serious consequences such as loss of bone structure can be avoided. However if gingivitis is left to advance it may lead to periodontal disease.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is when the bone structure of the tooth becomes damaged. When the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth, pockets form and these pockets collect debris which can become infected helping to accelerate the continued destruction of the bone and ligaments and ultimately resulting in tooth loss.
Periodontal disease is a serious condition, if you suspect you have periodontal disease or gingivitis see your dentist immediately.
Your family dentist will give your mouth a thorough examination, decide on the most appropriate treatment and explain to you what your options are.
